Area: 4,893 sq km

Location: 80 km west of Newcastle, 200 km north-west of Sydney

 

  • Located in the heart of the Hunter Valley Region, Singleton LGA has a vibrant industrial sector, supported by a well-established agricultural community and a growing population.

  • Major economic contributors include coal mining, power generation, engineering support, defence, beef cattle, dairy farming, tourism and viticulture.

  • Within the Singleton LGA are 20 coal mines producing around 85 million tonnes of raw coal per year. The bulk of this coal is exported.

  • Approximately 6,000 are directly employed in the coal mining industry.

  • Two of Australia`s largest coal-fired power stations, Liddell and Bayswater, are located on land straddling Singleton and Muswellbrook LGA.

  • Redbank Power Station is located in Singleton LGA and utilises coal tailings for its primary fuel. A pilot plant at Liddell is also trialling new solar thermal technology.

  • Extensive engineering support services for industries located in the Hunter have become important employment generating businesses.

  • New industrial estates are opening to meet the expanding need for industrial land.

  • Singleton Infantry Centre is a major provider of training to defence personnel in Australia. The Centre employs approximately 300 permanent staff and incorporates a training and firing range of 14,000 hectares which is used on a daily basis.

  • Singleton has long-established beef cattle and dairy sectors which have operated traditionally alongside market gardening and citrus growing. Of later years the olive and mushroom industries have developed.

  • Grape growing has a long history in Singleton and some of the oldest wineries are in the LGA. Areas of note are the Broke-Fordwich and Hermitage Road areas which produce award winning wines and provide a significant percentage of the Hunter’s grapes.

  • An emerging tourism industry, anchored on the Hunter vineyards, supports a well developed dining and accommodation sector.

  • A new Visitor Information Centre, along with the extension of the F3 Freeway to Branxton, is expected to make Singleton the focus for many Hunter visitors.
