Population: 66,530 (ABS 2007 Estimated Resident Population)

Location: 27km west of Newcastle, 170 km north of Sydney.

 

  • Maitland is the fastest growing non-coastal, non-metropolitan LGA in NSW.
  • Located on the fertile alluvial flats of the Hunter and Paterson Rivers, it is one of the most highly productive areas in NSW and a service centre for a rich agricultural hinterland.
  • Maitland is also an established transport hub with excellent road and rail links. These include highway links with Newcastle, Newcastle Airport, the Port of Newcastle and the Sydney Newcastle F3 Freeway, as well as rail links with fast and efficient freight and passenger services to Newcastle, Sydney, New England, NSW North Coast and Queensland.
  • The recently completed Weakley’s Drive Interchange has improved access to the Maitland, in particular Thornton.
  • Maitland is well placed between the Lower Hunter and Upper Hunter, providing an ideal business location between areas such as Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and the multi-billion dollar coal industry further up the Hunter Valley.
  • Maitland’s robust economy incorporates a broad cross section of industries including retail, tourism, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, transport and construction.

 

Retail - Maitland has become a retail shopping hub for the Lower Hunter region with a focus on Stockland. Recent bulky goods retail developments at Rutherford - west of Maitland Town Centre - have further widened the retail catchment area attracting consumers from the Upper Hunter area.

 

Stockland Green Hills has lodged a development application for a $270 million redevelopment that would include a new level and provide a total gross lettable area of around 70,000 sqm. The expansion would include a new Myer store, an additional discount department store and approximately 100 new specialty shops.

 

Property and Construction - Extensive land releases for residential, industrial, commercial and retail developments are fuelling a strong construction industry. The fast growing industrial and commercial areas at Thornton and Rutherford are attracting a diverse range of industries and industry support businesses for the region as a whole.

 

High-quality land is available across the LGA, including the major industrial areas such as Thornton Industrial Estate, Racecourse Business Park, Rutherford and AnambahBusiness Park, where industrial lots are available from just $100 per sqm.

 

Tourism - Maitland has a growing tourism sector which blends heritage and contemporary style. The street scapes of Maitland and surroundings are lined with historical buildings dating from the early 1800s. Visitors can explore the simple pleasures of local freshly grown produce, specialty wines or walking tours of the heritage preservation and natural landscape of the Hunter River. Major attractions

include the historic town of Morpeth, Maitland Gaol and Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

 

Government - The NSW Government’s Infringement Processing Bureau is located in Maitland along with the NSW Department of Mineral Resources Division of the Department of Primary Industry.
