COAL

  • Coal mining underpins the Hunter’s economy.

  • It generates more than 9,000 direct jobs and 40,000 indirect jobs, with profound flow-on benefits for the Region.

  • Approximately 80% of the coal mined in NSW comes from the Hunter.

  • The mining services industry ranges from professional services, education, training and research to general engineering and manufacturing, transport, construction, OH&S and employment services.

  • The demand for high-quality coal from Japan, Korea and Taiwan in particular has seen the Port of Newcastle become the world’s largest coal export port, shipping 88.88 million tonnes in 2007-08 worth $ 7.7 billion.

  • In that same period, the Hunter contributed approximately $840 million in royalties to the NSW State Government, making it a major contributor to the State’s economy.

  • High coal prices have provided the stimulus for the development of a number of new coal projects and mine extensions in the Region’s coalfields.
