POWER

·         The Hunter’s power generation industry produces round 80% of New South Wales’ electricity supply and employs approximately 2,200 people.

·         NSW’s large coal-fired power stations produce some of the cheapest electricity in Australia. It is for this reason that two of the world’s largest alumina smelters are located in the region.

  • Within the Hunter and adjacent Central Coast region, four generating companies operate six coal-fired power stations supplying power to the National Energy Market.

These companies and their power generating capabilities are as follows.

·         Two new gas-fired power stations are planned to be built at Tomago and Lake Munmorah to supplement the NSW grid during peak loads. Macquarie Generation’s

·         Tomago plant is planned for three phases; the first two phases involve a $500 million 500 MW open cycle stage, the final phase involves a 790 MW combined cycle stage at a cost of an additional $300 million. Delta Electricity’s $500 million, 660 MW Lake Munmorah station is due to be complete in late 2009.

  • As well as being a state leader in power generation, the Hunter leads the way in innovative energy production. The Hunter is also a leader in clean energy, with a number of projects in the Region at the cutting edge of technology.
