DEFENCE

  • The region has sophisticated defence infrastructure, a large and experienced defence support industry and a proven track record in defence project delivery.

·         RAAF Base Williamtown is the primary fighter base for the Royal Australian Air Force. It is one of the busiest RAAF bases in Australia handling over 1,000 movements a week. It is home to most of the Australian Air Force’s hornet and hawk fighters and is headquarters for the Air Force’s Surveillance and Response Group, Air Combat Group, and two training squadrons which include F/A-18 Hornet, BAE Hawk 127 and Pilatus PC 9 aircraft.

·         Over 4000 defence and contractors personnel are employed in the region injecting more than $200 million into the local economy. Major upgrades at Williamtown and Singleton have recently been announced and planned work is worth $130 million.

·         The Hunter houses 15 defence establishments, the main ones being the RAAF Base at Williamtown and the Singleton Military Area called the Lone Pine Barracks. In addition, there is an Army Base at Adamstown, and the Newcastle Harbour and shipyards are used for naval vessel building and repair.
