HEALTH

  • Health is a major industry sector in the Hunter Region, employing 30,490 persons according to the 2006 Census (a 24.1% increase over the 2001 Census figure).

  • This figure represents 12.3% of the workforce, which is significantly higher than the NSW figure of 10.7%.

  • The major provider of health services in the Region is Hunter New England Health which was established in 2005 following the merger between Hunter, New England and the Lower Mid North Coast local government areas of Gloucester, Greater Taree City and Great Lakes.

  • In total, the organisation has approximately 14,500 staff, 1500 medical officers and 1600 volunteers.

  • It spends around $1.3 billion pa. In the Hunter Region, Hunter New England Health operates the tertiary referral hospitals of John Hunter Hospital, John Hunter Children's Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle and Royal Newcastle Centre.

  • Within the Hunter Region, it also runs two mental health hospitals, a rural referral hospital, six community hospitals, seven district health services centres and 24 community health service centres.
