PORT OF NEWCASTLE

The Port of Newcastle is one of Australia’s major bulk export ports and the world’s largest coal export port. With over 3,200 ship movements a year, the Port of Newcastle provides major economic benefit to the city, the region and the State of NSW.

  • The port has the capacity to handle vessels up to a length of 300 metres and 50 metre beam and its principal navigation channel has a declared depth of 15.2 metres.

  • Whilst coal continues to be the port’s major export, expertise in handling other dry bulk products has enabled strong growth in these commodities. Newcastle Port Corporation continues to grow and diversify the region’s trade portfolio with break bulk, bulk liquids, project cargo and containers moving through the port.
  • Total trade through the Port of Newcastle in 2007-08 was valued at $10.3 billion dollars, with coal trade valued at $7.7 billion and other trade valued at $2.6 billion.
