CLIMATE

  • The Hunter Region is located in eastern New South Wales in the sub-tropical climatic zone.

  • With mountains to the west and north, and by the Pacific Ocean in the east, maritime influences play an important role in all aspects of its climate. Compared with those of the inland areas, coastal temperatures are characterised by lower maxima and higher minima.

  • This maritime influence also leads to higher rainfall and lower evaporation levels in the east of the Region relative to the western area.

  • Mid-latitude westerlies and high pressure systems alternate with cold fronts during winter. Winter conditions are drier than summer (particularly the months of July and August), with gusty westerly winds a principal feature of August.

  • South-easterly winds dominate during summer, however north-easterly sea breezes also occur and provide a cooling effect as far inland as Scone. Conversely, hot, dry north-westerly winds can also occur during summer, potentially fanning fuel bush fires.

  • Newcastle has an average of 6.3 hours of sunshine per day. The Hunter’s average January maxima is 27.3 degrees Celsius and minima 19.5 degrees Celsius and July average maxima is 17.2 degrees Celsius and minima 7.9 degrees Celsius.
