AGRIBUSINESS

  • Historically the Hunter Region is an important agricultural region, although production for much of this decade has been reduced due to severe and prolonged drought conditions. In normal conditions production would be expected to be well above a billion dollars.
  • However, even during the drought, the Region continued to produce wheat, sorghum, barley and other grain cereals, vegetables, grapes, olives, sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, poultry, eggs and milk. 
  • Employment in agriculture and agriculture related industries in 2006 in the Region was 5,759. Approximately 10% of all businesses in the Hunter are in the agriculture sector.
